Population Register of Middelburg 1900-1937
The population registration of Middelburg covering the 19th century was destroyed in May 1940. The administration from 1900 to 1937 has been preserved. The following information is registered: place of birth, date of birth, occupation, religion, address, the date when a person settled in Middelburg and the date he or she left the city or died.
Also added to this group are some registers with population information before 1900. The Zeeuws Archief has started to make a reconstruction of the Middelburg population registers on the hand of address books.
Added to this group are:
- the Charitable Institutions register 1863-1937, which includes the inhabitants of the several institutions in the city. Institutions were for example; the Gasthuis (hospital), some rest-homes, the Burger and the Armenweeshuis and the home of Kinderzorg.
- the Bargemen’s register 1871-1937. The bargemen and their families who had Middelburg as their home port were registered separately. This mainly concerns inland navigation bargemen.
- the Address books from 1874, 1888, 1889, 1892, 1893, 1895, 1897, 1898, 1899. In the address books you can find all main inhabitants and their address. Also their occupation or business is mentioned. In 1874 the city of Middelburg had 16.174 inhabitants, with 3.261 persons registered as principal occupier. In 1899 the number of inhabitants had increased up to 16.735, with 5.542 persons as principal occupier. In 1890 this number had increased up to 17.109 and 4.446, in 1898 18.636 and 5.967.
- Middelburgsche “Naamwijzers” 1847, 1848 and 1849
The Middelburgsche Naamswijzer was published between 1721 and 1852 by the city council of Middelburg and contains a review of the public and ecclesiastical positions in the eighteenth and nineteenth century Middelburg society. With each function the names of the persons are mentioned with the year of appointment or acceptance of their function. From 1853 the Middelburg Naamwijzer was published together with the Zeeuwsche Jaarboekje. The Naamwijzers covering the years 1847–1849 have been entered into ZEEUWEN GEZOCHT and make part of the reconstruction of the nineteenth century population register of Middelburg.
