1. What is Zeeuwen Gezocht precisely?
Zeeuwen Gezocht (Looking for Zealanders) is the personsname-database of the Zeeuws Archief which is available through the internet 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. Meanwhile the database includes more then 6 million personal names and is an important instrument for searching genealogical information. From a distant you can go to our reading room and deposits to look into the information without being forced to travel all the way to Middelburg. When it happens that you have become very curious and interested after consulting Zeeuwen Gezocht of course you are very welcome any time to come and visit our reading room in Middelburg.

Zeeuwen Gezocht is working through the program ISIS, part of SIS which stands for Study room Information System. ISIS is designed by Hans van der Zanden in order of the Circle of Archivists of Noord-Brabant. This program is a very basic though effective search system for all personal records in a wide variety which are available through the internet.

2. When will new data be supplemented? (updates)
The Zeeuws Archief supplements two times a year new information to the database Zeeuwen Gezocht. Thesesupplements are called updates in English (the language of the internet). Through the website of the Zeeuws Archief you will be informed about the moments when these updates will be available and which updates will be supplemented. On page New you can read which files are added to which update.

If you want to be informed directly about updates from Zeeuwen Gezocht you can subscribe to the mailing list. Please send a mail to isis.reactie@zeeuwsarchief.nl (with your name and address) and you will be informed.

3. How do I order copies?
This is very easy to do through Zeeuwen Gezocht. After defining a search instruction in the screen Criteria and after having read the details you will see at the bottom of the page the possibility to order a copy. You don’t  need  to fill in the form right away. Zeeuwen Gezocht will recall the order(s) until you end the program. So at the end of your visit you can still modify this list and sign for finally confirming the order. You can find information concerning the rates for copies through Order Information. Please keep in mind that not all listed items (copies or reader prints) can be ordered. On the page Order Information is mentioned which copies are not yet possible to order and why.

4. What to do when I come across incorrect information in the sources?
If you use Feedback you can inform us about the errors that you have found. Importing information from a variety of sources is done by people. It might be very much possible that there are some reading or inserting mistakes made. One has to keep in mind that for example also administrators can have made mistakes due to the fact that the informers might not have had correct information. All remarks are being collected and checked. Corrections will be made regularly, but usually it will take some months because the work is quite intensive.

If you want to report a mistake in the information you have to send the information itself also. This works very easy by selecting the text with Ctrl-c and Ctrl-v and stick it in the right text field. So we will know right away which context it is concerning and we can check it quickly.

5. Is it possible to print the page with found information?
Yes, it is very simple through your browser. Click on File and the option Print. Go to the print-choose window under Print range and choose All and the list with all information will be printed. Of course only when your printer is in the standby mode. It is also possible to print only a selection of the found information. Then select with the mouse all fields you wish to print. Select File and additional Print. Choose on the print choice-window which appears now under the button Print range for ‘Selection’ and everything which is selected is now being printed.

It is possible that while giving the search order ‘print this page’ there will be a script error mentioned. The possible cause of this is that the script-security of your browser is too strong defined.

6. How can I file the information in order to edit it off-line?
To preserve the information the most easy way is the following. Start word processing software or spreadsheet software like Microsoft Word or Excel. Select in the browser the information with the mouse or with Ctrl-A, copy the text with Ctrl-C, go with ALT-Tab to the chosen program and select Ctrl-V to stick it there.

7. How can I get to the original document?
You need to go to the Zeeuws Archief for the original documents. Zeeuwen Gezocht is only a search system and has the scans of the original documents not online. You do can – by paying a base rate – order copies.

8. What to do when the page with details does not open?
The detail-screen is a so called pop-up screen. If you have installed a program on your computer that blocks pop-up screens (mostly unwanted commercials), then the pop-up screen with the details will also be suppressed. The only solution is to remove the pop-up-killer from your computer or to switch off the program during the time that you are consulting Zeeuwen Gezocht.

9. I have filled in the search form (Criteria), but the result is: None of the events
matches all given criteria.

This search result can have different causes:

a. May be your search order was too specific; try again with fewer definitions.

b. It is also possible that the information is not yet added to the Zeeuwen Gezcoht. Check the information in the review on the page Sources

c. The document you were looking for is not yet public information. Counting back in time the marriage registers are open for public from 1933, birth registers from 1908, death certificates from 1958.

d. The person you are searching for is from abroad and not in the Dutch registers

e. The name of the place is not correct. Check this according of the place name lists on the page Sources

10. How can I proceed with searching?
